Independent Living Residences

Independent living is for older people looking to connect with peers and enjoy an active lifestyle free from concerns about home ownership, e.g. landscaping, maintenance, security, etc. There are two common models of service delivery: in the first, a monthly rental fee includes a package of services, e.g. meals, housekeeping, transportation, utilities, etc. In the second, these services are available on an a la carte basis in addition to the monthly rental fee. Usually, fees are charged for housekeeping and meal services in addition to a monthly apartment rental fee. Apartments/living space may vary in size depending upon the community’s options and room availability.

Our centers are committed to allowing individuals in independent living residences to "age in place" for as long as possible. If the need for services exceeds what is offered in the center, the resident has the option of bringing in supplemental services that enable the resident to remain in the center. This is summed up in the philosophy of getting "the care you need in the setting of your choice."

Independent living is primarily paid out-of-pocket. Care is tailored to individual needs and residents pay only for the services they require (in addition to basic rent rates).

Some communities may indicate that a security deposit is required or may charge an up-front fee called a “new resident services” fee. Because this fee varies by community and by state, check with the community of your choice for more information.

Having an apartment with all the comforts and furnishings you enjoy is what turns these spaces into a home. However, the size of apartments varies among independent living communities, so the amount of furnishings you are able to bring may be limited by the size of the apartment chosen.

Some communities allow residents to have pets in their apartment for a nominal, one-time fee. Check with the community you are considering for more information.
